About
My name is Sta’os’ta’on. I am a member of Wilp Luus of the Gitxsan Nation in British Columbia, Canada. My colonial name is Carol Bob and I am of Gitxsan, Coast-Salish, and Nuu-chah-nulth decent.
It is my belief that social and ecological injustices for Indigenous peoples and the environment need to be stated and addressed in mathematics classes. Why? I feel our future leaders need to be able to interpret data to impede the injustices around racism towards people of colour and the belief that humans are superior to non-humans.
It is my intent K-12 learners are equipped to not only interpret data but present data that is useful, transparent, and with the intention of being analyzed in the best interest of the marginalized populations including non-humans. As I tell my high school learners, it is important to be able to use your knowledge to advocate for the future generations right to a sustainable and safe environment.
As a graduate student with the University of British Columbia, I give my appreciation to Dr. Cynthia Nicol for providing me constructive feedback and for inspiring me to share my learnings. I am grateful for Dr. Peter Cole for sparking my interest in his Indigenous Narrative and Ecopedagogy course EDCP 539 and his encouragement to share my perspective. So, in reciprocity I share educational resources for K-12 educators to help implement the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action 62 and 63.
